School Crime and Violence on the Rise: What the Data Tells Us

Updated: Jan 14

A federal report from the National Center for Education Statistics reveals concerning trends about crime and violence in American schools. While school-related deaths have decreased since their peak in 2006-07, nonfatal incidents such as theft and assault are increasing. In 2012 alone, over 1.3 million students aged 12-18 experienced nonfatal victimizations at school.

The data also highlights a troubling rise in violence against teachers. During the 2011-12 school year, 5% of teachers reported being physically attacked by students—the highest percentage recorded.

In response, schools are implementing more robust security measures. Nearly two-thirds of schools now use security cameras, and more than one-quarter employ armed security staff. Additionally, practices like locking entrances during school hours and controlling building access are becoming more common.
