District 194 Explores Revolutionary School Security Measures

3D Response Systems

Updated: Jan 14

In a proactive move to enhance school safety, District 194, which includes Lakeville Area Schools, is exploring an innovative security system developed by 3D Response Systems, a Lakeville-based company. This multi-layered system is designed to deter, distract, and delay threats, providing an unprecedented level of protection for students and staff.

Key Features of the Proposed System

The 3D Response System incorporates several advanced security components tailored to safeguard schools against potential threats:

  • Shatterproof Glass Film: Strengthened glass on windows and doors prevents easy access for intruders, creating a significant delay in unauthorized entry.

  • Teacher-Controlled Safe Rooms: A push-button system allows teachers to secure classrooms instantly with magnetic locking doors, turning classrooms into safe zones without requiring teachers to leave their rooms.

  • Screamer Alarms and Strobe Lights: Audible alarms and visible strobe lights activate during a lockdown, alerting everyone in the vicinity while notifying first responders within seconds.

  • Non-Toxic Dye Sprays: Intruders entering specific areas can be sprayed with a colored dye, aiding law enforcement in identifying suspects. This feature also disorients potential threats, buying valuable time.

  • Real-Time Alerts: The system automatically contacts 911 dispatchers and sends real-time updates to first responders, including the specific location of the alert within the school.

Expert Endorsement

Michael Baumann, Executive Director of Business Services for the district and a retired U.S. Army colonel, expressed strong support for the system. Drawing from his tactical experience, Baumann emphasized the potential of this security system to revolutionize school safety. “This system has great promise,” Baumann said. “It puts power back into the hands of those who are being violated.”

A Community-Focused Approach

The system also includes comprehensive training for teachers and staff, combining Homeland Security’s run-hide-fight model with tailored strategies for utilizing the installed components. This training empowers educators—often the first responders during an active threat—to make informed decisions in critical moments.

Next Steps

The Lakeville Area School Board is set to discuss the proposal in an upcoming study session, considering options for a phased implementation, starting with high schools. Baumann and other district leaders are optimistic that this system will set a new standard for school security.

By investing in proactive and customizable solutions, District 194 is taking a bold step toward creating a safer learning environment for students and staff alike.
